The Seattle Dog
The Seattle Dog is weird, but I promise it’s good. You’re looking at a hot dog with cream cheese, grilled onions, some kind of jalapeños, and mustard. Back in 1989, a dude named Hadley Long was running an all-vegetarian bagel cart in Pioneer Square. He caved and started selling bagel dogs to get in with the late-night crowds, though. In the '90s, these things were grunge icons. (I think? This gets claimed a lot, but I haven't been able to find a source to fact-check it against. I’d like to believe that Kurt and Courtney were downing Seattle dogs, but there’s no evidence. It’s real in my brain, though...)
Five things I know about Seattle off the top of my head right now:
- grunge (hole > nirvana, btw)
- cream cheese hot dog and maybe teriyaki idk
- iCarly
- Space Needle
- furries, for some reason
I’ve seen these made with raw sliced jalapeños, raw minced jalapeños, grilled sliced jalapeños, and even jalapeño relish, but I don’t know which one is the original. Since I make these apartment-style in a pan, I generally just toss some sliced jalapeños in with the onions while they’re cooking. Raw is cool, too, though.
WHAT YOU NEED
- 1 hot dog
- 1 hot dog bun (I like brioche for these)
- cold cream cheese
- some diced yellow onion
- some jalapeño slices
- american yellow mustard

HOW-TO
- Mash your cream cheese with a fork or whisk it until the texture is smooth. If it's not softened like this, it won't spread right and you'll just mangle your bun.
- Heat a pan over medium and add a bit of oil. Add the onions and jalapeños, salt lightly, and let cook until they start to brown a bit.
- Push the veggies to the side, toss in your hot dog in, and fry it on all sides until it's done to your liking. You can remove the veggies if they start getting a bit overbrowned.
- Warm up your bun the way you like, then spread both inner faces with cream cheese. I like to use the back of a spoon for this.
- Put the dog in the bun, then top with the onions, jalapeños, and a zig-zag of mustard.
